Mary Clare Gast, 69, of Olathe, KS passed away at her home on Saturday, November 2, 2013.
The family suggests contributions to The Down Syndrome Guild of Greater Kansas City, or Cancer Action Inc.
Mary was born November 25, 1943 in Maryville, MO, the daughter of Herman Lager and Lorine (Bliley) Lager. She graduated from St. John's School of Nursing in 1963 and UMKC with a BA in business in 1991. She practiced nursing for 45 years in addition to raising 3 children with her husband Robert; spending countless hours volunteering in her children's classroom, helping with homework, Scouting, 4-H, sewing clothes and costumes, cheering at sporting events hot and cold, baking cookies, tending her gardens and most of all spoiling her grandchildren (nearly) rotten.
To say she "lost" her battle with cancer would be an untruth. She accepted her diagnosis with grace and dignity, setting an example for anyone facing adversity. She stayed mentally and physically strong by surrounding herself with positive influences including her large, close-knit family, countless friends, neighbors, yoga community and most importantly, her Catholic faith.
She was preceded in death by Herman and Lorine Lager, her brother Greg Lager and granddaughter Fay Lorine Gast.
She is survived by her husband of 41 years, Cleo Robert Gast, children David, Karen, and Michael and their spouses, 8 grandchildren, and 11 brothers and sisters.
