Mary Elizabeth Carnes

May 2, 1921 — February 21, 2019

Mary Elizabeth Carnes, 97, passed to her heavenly home on February 21, 2019.
She was born on May 2, 1921 to Clyde Leroy and Emeline Almira ('Mira' Henshaw) Miller in Bloomingdale, Michigan.

Mary (aka 'Betty') started her life story in Michigan, where she grew up and graduated High School in 1939. She married the love of her life, Walter Lee Carnes on November 19, 1942, and they raised their seven children in Mattawan, Michigan. As they moved to Oklahoma, Missouri and Kansas, she continued sharing her unconditional love, faith in God and wisdom with family and friends wherever she lived.

Mary blessed family and friends with courage and strength in the midst of hardships; she taught others to trust in the Lord, and lived her life in that manner. When life was not easy, her faith in God was unshakable. She was a sweet, God-loving woman. And she was most famous for her unrivaled Banana Bread!! She established and ran small businesses with her husband Walter. Mary took great joy in Bible study, participating in many Christian Women's groups, and volunteering throughout her entire life. At the age of 86, she learned to quilt and enjoyed art classes!

Mary is survived by her children: Marilee Corwin (Richard), Rosemary Ramsey, Charlene Shibel (Chris), Judy Dustin (Ken), Kennoth Carnes (Nanette), and Walt Carnes (Susan). She is also survived by a sister, Dorothy Michels, and two brothers, John and Lindy Miller.

Mary leaves behind 21 grandchildren, whom she cherished: David Corwin (Kristi), Dennis Corwin (Theresa), Dawn Corwin Rinehart (Tim), Kirk Yates (Amy), Chad Yates, Tina Yates, Mike Shibel, Jamey Shibel (Gina), Daniel Dustin (Jennifer), Jonathan Dustin (Jenni), Eden Carnes (David), Heather Carnes Burleigh (Christopher), McKenzie Carnes Burleigh (Jason), Jeremiah Carnes (Jennifer), Julie Carnes Scott (Pat), Joanna Carnes Holden (Zach), Janna Carnes Conklin (Brennan), Joshua Carnes (Lisa), Jacob Carnes (Ariel), Joy Carnes and Jordan Carnes.

Mary's legacy continues with 27 Great-grandchildren, each one she greatly loved even if she never held them: Jared, Alec and Seth Corwin; Jordan and Jenna Corwin; Andrew and Allison Rinehart; Evan, Grace and Sam Shibel; Randy and Sarah Dustin; Henry Carnes; Ellianna, Hudson and Everly Carnes; Rylee, Eli, Ethan and Eian Scott; Rachel, Alexandra, Micah, Lawson and Scarlett Holden; Lyndlee and Israel Conklin.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Clyde and Mira Miller; her husband, Walter Lee Carnes; son, Lloyd George Carnes; and great-grandson, Gavin Conklin. Also preceding her in death are three brothers: Delno, William and Clyde Miller, and two sisters: Almira Miller Brooks and Marilyn Miller.

The family acknowledges and greatly appreciates the loving care given to Mary in her final years by the staff at Good Samaritan Nursing Center, and in her final hours, her grandson Jamey, her doctors, nurses, and the hospice team.
