Mary Dana Basara, 68, of Shawnee, died November 5th, 2019. She was born on August 30th, 1951 in Birmingham, AL. Her family soon moved to Florida where they settled in Okeechobee. She was the daughter of James Donald Davis and Mary Ann (Watkins) Davis. She is survived by her husband of 39 years, Joe Basara, son James Daniel Swanger, daughter Jaimie Ann Swindler, grandson Joseph Isaac Swindler, and sister Margaret Ann Carver. Younger brother, James "Jimmy" Davis, died years earlier in a trucking accident.
Dana was a nurse for over 40 years. In 1993, while managing the Bay State Emergency Department, she earned Massachusetts Emergency Nurse of the Year Award. She earned her Doctorate in Nursing from the University of Kansas in 2015 at age 64. Over the years, Dana had many nursing positions including running the Trauma Center at Truman Hospital, and instructing nursing students at MCCC, University of Mary and others. Dana was a beloved teacher who made the time to ensure her students succeeded both in passing their nursing board exams and in life.
The light of Dana's life was her grandson Isaac. To Isaac, his "Gee" was his best friend and partner in crime, and she spent many afternoons "rat killing" (going toy shopping), going to Isaac's favorite movies and having sleepovers. Dana was an important influence over Isaac's life and is greatly missed.
Dana was equally loved by her extended family in Florida and by many other people she considered family whom she met as a teacher, as a volunteer and through church. Dana was a long-time volunteer nurse for City Union Mission, and had a passion for serving people who are homeless, being named to national boards on homelessness.
Dana loved her husband Joe dearly, having told him when they were married she said they would never have enough time together.
A Celebration of Life will be held Saturday, November 16th from 6:00 - 8:00pm at First Baptist Church in Shawnee, 11400 Johnson Dr, Shawnee, KS.
In lieu of flowers, the family ask that memorial donations may be given to City Union Mission, 1100 East 11th St, Kansas City, MO, 64106.
