Marolyn Jean Hanlon, 91, recently of Lawrence, passed away on October 15, 2019. She was born on March 26, 1928 to Herbert and Evelyn (Prosser) Applebaugh in Manhattan, KS. Her Father's job moved them to Frankfort, Hutchinson, and Kinsley, KS finally settling in Olathe in 1940. She lived there the rest of her life.
She attended John Pierce St. John High School and graduated in 1946. She worked for a dentist while still in high school and studied to be a dental assistant. She attended KSU where she studied to become a dietitian. There she met Willis Hanlon and the couple were married in 1947.
She was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother, a strongly committed Christian, and a legendary cook. She and Willis occasionally took people into their home who temporarily needed help. They were treated like family, encouraged, and given the tools to live a successful life.
She was a fierce defender of her family and devoted herself to their welfare. Marolyn worked a number of years at Applebaugh Electric, her brother, Bob's, business as office manager, bookkeeper, dispatcher, and whatever else was needed. She was devoted to her church, the First United Presbyterian Church of Olathe, and was a choir member there, participated in women's ministries, and volunteered in the food pantry ministry.
One of her great joys was the yearly family vacation trips to Colorado. Grandparents, uncles, aunts, cousins, and friends participated in fishing, exploring, and even mountain climbing. Many hair-raising experiences were had, and many stories told.
In her later years, she enjoyed enthusiastically cheering on her favorite sports teams and athletes, reading, and doing crossword puzzles. She continued to cook and bake well into her 80s for a grateful family who particularly loved her mashed potatoes and oatmeal chocolate chip cookies.
Marolyn's life was filled with love and devotion to her family, friends, and God. She will be greatly missed, and her influence will be felt for generations.
Marolyn is survived by her loving daughter, Pamela Soper; grandchildren, Mindy Epting Hewitt (Kevin), Brandon Epting (Erika), Kathryn and Timothy Hanlon; along with five great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Willis Hanlon; brother, Robert Applebaugh; daughter, Patricia Epting; sons, Michael Hanlon, Brian Hanlon; and granddaughter, Holly Epting.
