Lyndon Tomasch

June 10, 1940 — November 20, 2012

Lyndon Thomas Tomasch, 72, of Olathe, Ks., eldest son of Elmer J. and Sadie (Pelkey) Tomasch, was born June 10, 1940, in Lake Placid, N.Y. He passed away Tuesday November 20, 2012, at the Kansas City Hospice House following a hospitalization of only 10 days.

Lyn's early years were spent in upstate New York and New York City where he explored nature with his grandfather "Pip" and the world of cartooning with his father (then a cartoonist for Marvel Comics.) The family moved to Manhattan, Ks., when his father joined the art department of KSU. There Lyn's interests came to favor nature and wildlife. Living near campus Lyn spent time observing and assisting with chores at the "vet barns", exploring the hills and hunting and fishing.

Lyn attended public and Catholic schools in Manhattan, graduating from Manhattan High School in 1958. He then enlisted in the U.S. Navy receiving training in San Diego and serving in San Francisco, Hawaii, Japan, Okinawa, and other ports of the WestPac Tour aboard the USS Ranger '61-'62. He served in the Naval Reserve until 1963. He attended Ks. State University, majoring in political science and business. There he met and married Linda (Bremer) on Aug. 10, 1963. In August they celebrated their 49th year together. They moved to Northglen, Co. where Linda taught school and Lyn attended Colorado University, working also at Public Finance in Denver and Mann's Trout Farm in Commerce City. Stocking lakes in the mountains with fish revived Lyn's love of nature and hunting, but his Civil Service Exam brought them to St. Louis, Missouri in 1968 to employment at the U.S. Army Mobility Equipment Command and the U.S. Postal Service Data Processing Center. Lyn's daughters were born in St. Louis and spent much time camping and fishing and exploring nature trails around Quiver River. In December of 1974 they relocated in Olathe at the opening of the K.C. Ks. Bulk Mail Center where Lyn was employed for 35 years. For more than 40 years Lyn annually returned to western Kansas for pheasant and deer season and hoped to eventually enjoy retirement years in Decatur County.

Lyn was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Kim, who was laid to rest on November 1, 2012. Lyn is survived by his wife, Linda, his daughters Lisa (Larry) Sonsthagen and Lori (Dwayne) Smith, and grandchildren, Matthew, Emily and Zachary Sonsthagen, and Marisa Taylor and Riley Frasure, all of Olathe.

The family suggests memorials to the Hospice House of Olathe or First Baptist Church.

Graveside service will be held on Sunday, November 25th in Oberlin, Kansas with military honors by Post 70 of the American Legion.
