Lisa Lanai (Tomasch) Sonsthagen passed away on Saturday, February 24, 2024, surrounded by her loved ones. Lisa was born on August 19, 1968, to Lyndon and Linda (Bremer) Tomasch and raised in Olathe, Kansas. Lisa and her sister, Lori, were always going on adventures together. They enjoyed taking the camper to the lake and spending time swimming at the beach, visiting Oberlin, attending family reunions, and taking trips to Denver. Lisa and Lori loved listening to their mom play the piano and singing old songs with her, cross-stitching together, and cuddling with their cats and dogs. They also enjoyed participating in church youth group activities and TNT skits/programs that their mom organized. Lisa grew up attending First Baptist Church of Olathe and grew strongly in her faith through the love and support of her parents and church family.
Lisa was an avid student and graduated from Olathe North High School as valedictorian. She played the flute in the band program, was a member of the French Club (and even had dreams while in France where everyone was speaking French and she understood it all!) and was a member of the National Honor Society. The night of her graduation she attended a party and met Larry Sonsthagen. Their friendship blossomed into a love that would last forever. They were married May 1, 1993. They raised three children and set an example of how to be patient, gentle, and unwavering in their love for each other.
Lisa attended Rockhurst University for her undergraduate experience and the University of Kansas to earn her master's degree in school psychology. Lisa worked in the Blue Valley School District for over 30 years and touched the lives of the staff, families, and students she worked with. Her Liberty View Elementary family and Private School Leadership Team held a special place in her heart. She was a consistent source of positivity, comfort, and wisdom to all she worked with. Many who worked closely with her remember her bright, beautiful smile, even in the midst of all the hustle and bustle of the school day. Her e-mail signature held a wonderful reminder, "One step at a time, one breath at a time, do the next good thing."
Lisa has been an active member at First Baptist Church of Olathe since she was a child. As an adult she enjoyed serving as a Sunday school teacher, was a member and host of a variety of women's bible study groups including GALS (Girlfriends Accountable to Living Spiritually), and loved volunteering her time and talents at a variety of church events. She inspired many with her unwavering faith. She was always there to support others through prayer, sending scripture, and offering a listening ear and words of encouragement.
Lisa valued family time and making memories with loved ones. She had a knack for bringing fun and joy to even the small moments of life. Her children will hold on to the memories of trips to the blueberry patch, picnics at the park, swimming laps at the pool, and going on long walks where they talked about everything under the sun. From birthday parties and vacations, to coffee dates, to just chatting during a car ride, her children will always remember her laughter and how loved she made each of them feel.
She is preceded in death by her parents Lyndon and Linda Tomasch. Lisa is survived by her loving husband, Larry, children, Matthew and his spouse Megan, Emily, and Zachary, and sister Lori (husband Dwayne) and nieces Marisa and Riley.
A visitation will be held on March 30th at 10:00 am at the First Baptist Church of Olathe. A Celebration of Life will follow starting at 11:00 am.
