Letha Hershey Chatburn
Letha Hershey was born July 12, 1921 in Seiling, Dewey Co., Oklahoma and died peacefully, but unexpectedly, April 5, 2011 in Leawood, Johnson Co., Kansas. She was the third of three children born to Henry Hershey and Delcena Bly Hershey.
The Hersheys moved to Independence, Missouri in 1922 and then to Hammond, Indiana in 1934. Letha graduated from Hammond High School in 1939. She received her A.A. degree from Graceland College in 1941 and her B.A. degree from the University of Iowa in 1944. Letha married Harley Guy Chatburn on November 30, 1945. They had two children, Gary and Sharon.
Letha was a faithful member of the Community of Christ. She played the piano for church services for many years. She was a leader in Cub Scouts, Blue Birds, Campfire Girls, PTA, and vacation church school. She enjoyed arts and crafts, ceramics, painting, knitting, sewing, stamp collecting, and reading. For many years she was the puppet lady at church reunions and the craft lady at church youth camps.
Letha enjoyed traveling and was looking forward to a short trip with her daughter this spring. She was also a sports fan and liked to watch football, baseball, basketball and golf on television.
Harley and Letha lived in Tulsa and Sperry, Oklahoma for over 55 years until they moved to Kansas in 2003. Letha enjoyed living at Town Village Leawood and made many new friends there. She had fun making costumes for Halloween and dressing up for other special events. She was active and enjoying life up to the day she died.
Letha's husband, Harley, died in 2004. Her brother, Marvin Hershey, died in 2007. Letha is survived by her sister, Ina Hershey Metcalf, of Wichita, Kansas; her children, Gary Chatburn and wife Ruth of Lubbock, TX, Sharon Chatburn Wood and husband Dennis of Olathe, KS; two grandsons, Mark Chatburn and wife Stephanie of Grain Valley, MO, John Chatburn and wife Andi of Spokane, WA; two great granddaughters, Olivia and Madeline Chatburn of Grain Valley, MO; nephews Wayne Chatburn, Creighton Metcalf, Marlow Metcalf and Keith Hershey; nieces Barbara Ann Thompson, Gloria Fawcett, and Joan Hice.
