Larry E. Wertz was called home to be with our Lord on July 3, 2018. A memorial service will be held at 6pm on Monday, July 9th at Penwell- Gabel Funeral Home, Olathe, KS, with visitation available from 4-5pm the same day. The family suggests contributions to The American Legion Post 153 of Olathe or St. Jude's Children's Hospital.
Larry was born to Pearl Nora Davis and Ernest H. Wertz on October 5, 1934 in Warren, PA. At 17 years of age, he joined the Air Force and served for four years. He is a Korean War veteran. After his service he briefly attended Central Missouri State University where he met his loving wife, Diane. They were married for just over 58 years, and they had four children.
Larry spent his career working for the sheet metal union in Kansas City. Larry was active in the American Legion Post 153 and served in the honor guard. Larry and Diane both belonged to the 58th Fighter Association Air Force Reunion. Between the American Legion and Air Force Reunion, Larry met some truly amazing friends that he cherished. Many good memories were made and they warmed his heart, forever more.
Our father was preceded in death by his wife, Diane, his daughter, Cheryl, and his son, Martin. He leaves behind his daughter Susan Wertz-Friend and her husband, Scott, and their three children, Blake, Evan, and Ryan, all of Olathe, and another daughter, Shelley Wertz-Schmidt and her son, Davis Schmidt, both of Olathe. Also surviving are his two brothers, John Currie and Gerald Currie and a step sister, Charlene Cole.
Dad was gruff on the exterior but filled full on the inside of love, generosity, kindness, laughter, integrity, and held an honor and respect for America that was so admirable. He always made sure his daughters and families were safe and provided for. One thing for sure, his grand-boys love him with all their hearts! This great man has touched many lives in a variety of ways and he was deeply loved by all who knew him. Dad, we love you and can't wait to hold your hand again soon.
