Kimberly Ann Mitchell

September 7, 1967 — March 30, 2025

Kimberly Ann (Hutchinson) Mitchell, 57, died March 30, 2025 surrounded by her loving family. She will be deeply missed by those who knew and loved her.

Kim was born on September 7, 1967 in Shawnee, Kansas to Jim and Margaret Hutchinson.

She attended St. Joseph Catholic Grade School in Shawnee and graduated from Aquinas High School in 1986.

When she was younger Kim enjoyed playing softball, often on teams with her sister, Theresa. Kim was a great glove at second base and could bat with the best of them.

Kim had her first child, Austin, in 1990. Born with the rare genetic disorder Trisomy 17, Kim never wavered with taking care of him. Austin has needed around the clock care ever since and has consumed most of her time over the last 34 years, but she faithfully accepted the responsibility and took incredible care of him.

She met the love of her life, James Mitchell, in 1991 and they were married in 1995. They welcomed their son, Dallas, in 1997 and their son, Dawson, in 2004.

More than anything Kim enjoyed being a mom to her three sons. She devoted her life to them, never letting a moment pass when it came to playing with them, supporting them, helping them and loving them. They described her as the best mother they could have asked for, and she certainly was.

Kim possessed a great sense of humor, had a wonderful laugh, and always put others before herself. You could never find a more selfless person. She was also an outstanding cook. Her meals were legendary and she leaves behind a lot of hungry loved ones. We will always appreciate how she took care of all of us.

Kim had many interests, but the one that stands out most of all was her love of fireworks. The bigger, the better. She enjoyed the 4th of July more than any other holiday. There will always be an empty seat reserved for her every 4th but we know she will be watching with the best view of all.

She was preceded in death by her beloved mother, Margaret Hutchinson.

She is survived by her husband, James, and her sons, Austin, Dallas and Dawson, her father, Jim Hutchinson, siblings Kathy Hutchinson, Theresa Haney (Mike), and Shawn Hutchinson (Katie), as well as many nieces and nephews who loved her so much.

Donations in Kim’s honor can be made to the Special Olympics of Kansas.
