Kenneth Kelly

April 29, 1923 — December 25, 2014

Kenneth M. Kelly, 91, born near Caldwell, Kansas, on April 29, 1923 the only child of Lex (James Alexander) and Nell Mae (Schappel) Kelly, died December 25, 2014 at Good Samaritan Society in Olathe, KS.

He attended Hahn rural school near the farm where he grew up, and Caldwell High School, graduating in 1940. Mr. Kelly attended Wichita University from 1940-1942, then served in the U.S. Navy (1943-1946) in Communications and Codes and Ciphers, in England, Scotland, France, and in the Navy Dept. in Washington, D.C. He returned to Wichita State University and graduated with a B.A. in 1947, and attended graduate schools at Georgetown and George Washington in Washington, D.C.

He later worked in Lima, Peru, in San Juan, Puerto Rico and in San Paulo, Brazil. On returning to the U.S., he taught at New York University, and Fordham University in New York. In 1972, Mr. Kelly moved to Gardner, KS where he taught French and Spanish at the Gardner-Edgerton High School from 1972-1987, when he retired. He was a member of the Methodist Church until 1977, when he joined the First Presbyterian Church, becoming an ordained elder. After retirement, he lived in Gardner, and since 2001 in Cedar Lake Village, in Olathe, KS.


In addition to his interest in foreign languages, he was a member of the Kansas City Astronomical Society and the Gardner Historical Museum. He was preceded in death by his parents. He was never married.
