Joyce was born July 6, 1938, in Creighton, Missouri, to Samuel and Thelma McCalmon. She was preceded in death by her parents and her brother, Billy Roy McCalmon. Joyce attended high school in Clinton, Missouri, where she made many lifelong friendships. She went on to attend Central Missouri State University where she received an associate's degree in medical technology. In her over forty years as a registered Medical Technologist with the American Society of Clinical Pathologists, she went on to work at General Hospital, Bethany Medical Center, and the Johnson County Health Department. Not long after moving to Kansas City for work, she met her husband, Robert, in the laboratory at General Hospital--they were married a few months later on December 4th, 1960.
An avid gardener, she cared for her beloved roses and flower beds every spring and summer with lavish attention. Joyce was an accomplished musician. She played the piano, clarinet, and had a beautiful singing voice. She was involved with several area choirs--including the Civic Chorus and the Kansas City Symphony Chorus--for over 25 years, volunteering her time and talent to be a part of classical music in Kansas City. Her other pursuits included genealogy and history, where her pre-internet sleuthing skills revealed her to be a fine amateur historian and researcher. Joyce was also an adept seamstress, sewing countless costumes, prom dresses, choir dresses, capes, and purses for her daughters over the years.
Joyce adored being a mother and grandmother--and, teaching and sharing knowledge with her children. She loved having people in her home, and made every guest feel comfortable, welcome, and a part of the family. She is survived by her husband of 58 years Robert "Bob" Jones, and their daughters Malinda McCasland (Tom McCasland), Julia Cozby (Drew Cozby), Kathleen Jones (Erik Kadan), and her grandchildren Michael, Sarah, Amy, Marian, and Emily McCasland.
Joyce loved flowers, and they will be much appreciated. If you would like to make a donation in lieu of flowers, Kansas City Hospice & Palliative Care is a non-profit serving local counties in Kansas & Missouri since 1980: kchospice.org
