John Richard Nicholson, Sr., 71, of Independence, passed away Aug. 21, 2014. Celebration of Life will be 11 a.m. Monday, Aug 25, at VFW 3976 with military honors.
Born Jan. 6, 1943, in Kansas City, Mo., to Bobby T.L. Nicholson and Virginia (Richards) Nicholson. An Air Force brat, John graduated from high school in San Antonio. He then joined the U.S. Navy serving in Vietnam on the river in a PT boat. After nine years in the Navy he served in the National Guard.
He is survived by his wife of 16 years, Carol Nicholson and three sons, John Jr., Scott, and Charlie; one step-son, Derrick McKaig; six grandchildren, John III, Josh, Tanner, Lexie, Taylor Nicholson and Keegan McKaig. Preceded in death by his parents.
He retired from the City of Independence and was a Life member of the VFW. He leaves behind many family and friends who will miss him greatly. In lieu of flowers, donations to the VFW.
