John Ream, 62, of Olathe, KS, died Sunday, November 20 at Kansas City Hospice House attended by his family, after a struggle with cancer.
John Wesley Ream was born on February 22, 1949 in Brownsville, PA to Thomas E. Ream, Sr. and Gladys Ream. He graduated from Titusville (FL) High School in 1967. In 1973, he graduated from Bethany Nazarene College (OK) with a Bachelor's in Religion. In 1984 at the Nazarene Theological Seminary in Kansas City, MO, he received his Masters of Divinity. In 1988, he completed his education at UMKC with an M.A. in Counseling with an educational specialty.
Upon college graduation, John worked both in pastoral positions and in fund raising work, including the United Way in Cleveland OH. In 1978, after raising funds for mission work in India, John traveled with a team that was in missionary service there for more than a year.
Upon completion of his counseling education, John began work at the Metropolitan Community Colleges, and later, the MCC's Business and Technology Center, retiring in 2009 as an administrator.
In the community, John supported ministries at Heartland Community Church for many years. He served the men's ministry there as a curriculum developer and devotional writer.
John was a man of simple taste whose life was defined by love and generosity. He will be remembered for his deep relational bonds, caring spirit, and Christ-like life.
John Ream is survived by his mother, Gladys of Springfield, MO; sister Elizabeth G. Wilson of Rogersville, MO; brothers Thomas E. Ream of Sacramento, CA and David Ream of Litchfield, CT; and his two children, John Ream, Jr. and wife Emily of Olathe, KS, and Diane Svensson and husband Jon of Wheaton, IL. John is also survived by many nieces, nephews and cousins.
