John M. Harbert

March 10, 1940 — November 7, 2016

John Michael Harbert, 76, of Overland Park, KS, passed away November 7, 2016 at Olathe Hospice House, after suffering a cerebral hemorrhage on October 20. He was born in Carrollton, MO, to Marvin F. and Mary Jane Kinsey Harbert. He graduated from Carrollton High School, Class of '58.

John is survived by his wife of 55 years and high school sweetheart, Beth Poindexter Harbert; three daughters; Cynthia "Cindy" (David) Pepper, Cheryl (Mark) Bailey, and Kristin (Randy) Asmus, all of the area; six grandchildren; Brandon (Cassie) Harbert, Ashley Padelli, Michael (Morgan) Sobanek of Aubrey, TX, Dylan (Saria) Pepper, Ashlyn Pepper, and Kinsey Asmus; six great-grandchildren, ages 4 years to 7 months; Maddison "Maddi" Padelli, Faith, Hope and Ava Harbert, and Aaron and Emily Pepper. He also leaves a brother, Charles A. Harbert and his wife Sheila of Seminole, OK, a great-niece, Shaylee, of their home, and a nephew, Martin Harbert and his family of Pueblo West, CO, as well as two cousins, Laura Christisen of Columbia, MO, and her sister, Rosa McHenry of Waco, TX (formerly Wichita, KS), who were flower girls in John and Beth's wedding.

John began a 44-year career in collision repair at age 16 at Carl's Body Shop in Carrollton, and retired after 32 years at Suburban Body Shop in Merriam, KS. He then worked 14 years as a painter with his daughter, Kristin, and her husband. He was well-known and respected for his loyalty and tireless work ethic.

John treasured family gatherings and was a fan of NASCAR, NHRA, the KC Chiefs, and KU Jayhawks basketball. He was happiest when helping family and friends with home or vehicle repair, advice, or just a friendly neighborhood chat during an outdoor project or lawn work. He enjoyed growing many kinds of flowers and several species of hosta, feeding the birds, and relocating squirrels, which he was certain kept returning just to annoy him!

John and Beth were blessed to be able to travel extensively over the years, making friends far and wide, enjoying cruises and road trips and had only four remaining states to visit in the U.S.--Michigan, Wisconsin, North Dakota and Alaska. But home was where John's heart was and family was his joy. He will be sorely missed by all who knew and loved him.

John was a longtime member of Grace Christian Fellowship Church, Shawnee, KS, where he served as usher, greeter, a helping hand and, with Beth, belonged to the "Young at Heart" group. A special time of remembrance and thanksgiving for John's life will be held immediately following the regular Sunday service at the church on November 27th, where the family will greet friends in the Fellowship Hall from 11:30AM to 1:00PM. Refreshments will be provided. All are welcome to attend the service beginning at 10:00AM with music by the worship team including John's grandson, Brandon, on the violin.

"Well done, good and faithful servant!" Matthew 25:23

The family wishes to thank the dedicated doctors, nurses and aides in the ER, ICU, and HNV units of Shawnee Mission Medical Center, Dr. Paul D. Moore, Jr. and his nurse, Lara, with special thanks to the caring and compassionate staff at Olathe Hospice House.

With deep appreciation, memorials may be made to Grace Christian Fellowship Church, 7230 Quivira Road, Shawnee, KS 66216, or to Olathe Hospice House, 15310 S. Marion St., Olathe, KS 66061.
