John C. Ferry

February 25, 1949 — May 6, 2020

John Charles Ferry, 71, of Roeland Park, KS, passed away on May 6, 2020 at Kansas City Hospice House. He was born on Feb. 25, 1949 to Joseph and Gladys (Westerman) Ferry in Hutchinson, KS.

John is survived by his loving Wife, Margaret, Son, Joel, and Daughter, Atty. He is also survived by his brother, Joe and sister, Eddy (Sundbye), and three cousins who he considered brothers, Marc, Monty and Mike Westerman. John was preceded in death by his sister, Patty (Astle).

John loved life and visiting with friends, family and strangers alike. He and his wife traveled extensively and trips back to San Francisco never got old. But once his daughter had a place in wine country where they could visit, it upped the stakes! He had a passion for rail travel and loved engaging with fellow travelers and hearing their stories.

Sports were a big part of John's life through the years and he loved playing baseball, basketball and riding his bike. Spending time with his son at Royals Spring Training in Arizona was one of his favorite memories. Although he attended K-State University, he grew up loving KU basketball and followed them through his life. Along with the KC Royals and Super Bowl Champs KC Chiefs!

John believed in service to his country and served in the Army, 18th Military Police Brigade, stationed in Vietnam. He truly believed the time in the Army shaped him as an adult.

After working 25 years as a Sales Supervisor/Manager at Time Warner, he started thinking about what type of volunteer service would give him meaning in retirement. The perfect fit was the World War I Memorial where he could interact with visitors and pass on the lessons of history, one of his favorite subjects. He also believed staunchly that you will be judged for how you treat people in this life and caring for those in need or underserved.

A private service will be held at Penwell-Gabel Funeral Home, Olathe, KS. When the time is right and social distancing is eased, a military funeral will be conducted in Hutchinson, KS.
