John Fales

John Thomas Fales, 77, Leawood, KS, passed away Monday, Aug. 29, 2005. Burial Mt. Moriah Cemetery. In lieu of flowers contributions to the American Heart Association.

John was born June 8, 1928 in Montgomery, AL. and lived in Baltimore, MD until 1973 when he moved to Leawood, KS. He received his undergraduate degree from Johns Hopkins University and received his ScD from the Johns Hopkins University School of Hygiene and Public Health. He did post-doctoral research at the University College of London and returned to Johns Hopkins where he was a professor at the School of Hygiene and Public Health and was a principal researcher for the American Heart Assn. After his move to the Kansas City area he became Chairman of the Biology Dept. and professor at the School of Medicine at UMKC. He was instrumental in establishing the School of Life Sciences and the Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist program. Upon his retirement from UMKC he was the Assistant Dean of the School of Life Sciences.

He was an Army veteran of the Korean Conflict. He was a member of the Lutheran Church of the Resurrection.

He was preceded in death by his father, William Thurber Fales; mother, Hazel Evelyn Fales; brother, William Thurber Fales, Jr.; sisters, Muriel Evelyn Green and Hazel Fales.

He leaves his wife of 53 years, Joanne Vera Fales; son, John Thomas Fales, Jr. and wife Jennifer; daughter, Nancy Louise Cain and husband Charles; daughter, Deborah Joanne Campbell and husband Calvin; son, George Thurber Fales and wife Julie; daughter, Yi Lin Zang and husband Jin; daughter, Nai Min Wei; grandchildren, Clay, Brent, Beth, Laura, Ashlea, Tory, Claire, Bridget, Brody, Joe, David, Jimmy; and brother, Bruce Arthur Fales.
