Joan S. Chestnut, 80, of Olathe, passed away on October 12, 2018. She was born on October 31, 1937 to Melvin Pennypacker Snyder and Mary Irene (Ammon) Snyder in Elverson, PA.
Joan was born and reared in Elverson, Pennsylvania overlooking the beautiful Conestoga Valley at the heart of Pennsylvania Dutch country. At the age of ten years old, Joan accepted the Lord as her Savior. She attended the Elverson Borough School and graduated in 1955 from Caernarvon Township High School in Morgantown, PA. Joan attended Bob Jones University in Greenville, S.C. where she met her husband, John. They married in 1960 and she graduated in 1962 with a Bachelors of Science, Elementary Education. Joan went on to teach for over 40 years in schools in Kansas, North Carolina and Guam. She was a chalk artist and did many presentations of Bible stories for Sunday School and Church. She celebrated her 40th wedding anniversary by traveling to Croatia on a missions trip. While there she taught English to Croatian children. Joan enjoyed knitting, playing games and spending time with family. Doting on her grandchildren and great grandson was her favorite pastime.
Joan is survived by her loving husband, John Chestnut; children, Kirk Chestnut (spouse Deborah) and Kelly Lawton (spouse Tim); grandchildren, Joanna Lawton, Kelsey (spouse Cameron) Bowen, Shaun Lawton, Charity Lawton, Erin Chestnut, Kathryn Lawton, Emily Chestnut, and great- grandson, James Bowen.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Melvin and Mary Snyder; brother, Clarence Snyder; and sister, Mary Jean Beattie, and granddaughter Caitlyn Joy Chestnut.
The family will receive guests for a visitation from 10:30-11:00am on Tuesday, October 16, 2018, at Olathe View Baptist Church, 330 N Olathe View Rd, Olathe, KS 66061, the funeral will follow at 11:00am.
In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to Republican City Cemetery, in care of James Chestnut, 1117 14th Rd. Clay Center, KS 67432.
