Joan Ruth Blomquist

Joan Ruth Blomquist, daughter of Dr. George and Ruth (Doherty) Gamerdinger, was born on May 27, 1932 in Stuart, Iowa and peacefully departed this life on March 16, 2019 at her home in Olathe, Kansas
She graduated from Stuart High School with honors in 1950. She was a resident of Dexter, Iowa living on the family farm for 50 years where she and her husband, Wayne, engaged in farming. Joan was predeceased by Wayne in a tragic farming accident on October 16, 1993. She lived on the farm until 2005 when she then decided to move to Olathe, Kansas to be closer to her daughter, Nancy (Blomquist) Shierk.
On November, 18, 1951, she was united in marriage to Wayne Charles Blomquist and had two children, Steve and Nancy. Joan was predeceased by Steve, who died on January 16, 1996, and an infant granddaughter, Ann Marie Dickey (October 9, 1976), and an infant grandson, Ryan Michael Blomquist (March 23, 1977).
Joan was a member of Stuart-Mount Vernon United Methodist Church in Stuart, Iowa for 60 years and recently attended Heritage United Methodist Church in Overland Park, Kansas.
Joan will be missed by the many good friends she met in the Kansas City area and many friends and family in Iowa. She is survived by her daughter and husband Nancy and Scott Shierk of Olathe, Kansas; daughter-in-law, Debbie Blomquist of Auburn Washington; grandchildren Scott and Jennifer Blomquist of Bellevue, Washington and their two children Nicholas and Caitlan; Chad Blomquist of Auburn, Washington; and Carey and Tony Braun of Panama City Beach, Florida and their four children Benjamin, Emilia, Veronica and Elise.
Joan will be remembered as a selfless and generous wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, and friend.
A Celebration of Life will be held at Penwell Gabel Funeral Home in Olathe, Kansas from 4:00-6:00pm on Friday, March, 22, 2019.
A Memorial Service will be held at Stuart-Mount Vernon United Methodist Church in Stuart, Iowa, on Friday, March 29th, at 10:00am.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial contributions be made to KU Endowment, 3901 Rainbow Boulevard, Mail Stop 3012, Kansas City, KS 66160, to benefit pulmonary disease research at the University of Kansas Medical Center. Online contributions may be made at www.kuendowment.org/give. Please indicate that donations are in memory of Joan Blomquist.
