Jimmie L. Bergey, 83 of Overland Park, KS (formerly of Norman, OK) passed away Thursday October 3, 2019 at Autumn Leaves of Overland Park.
Jimmie was born in Keota, Oklahoma to Murvin and Hattie Opal Scoggins on February 13, 1936. Her life weaved an intricate pattern of love and service to others while balancing a discipline to learning and education. She had a passion for reading and at the age of 5 she taught herself to read from the newspaper comics. Her passion led her to a lifelong pursuit of education and service. She graduated from Boynton High School in 1954. She was a 4H Song Leader and a member of the Glee Club. Jimmie was a testament to perseverance and to following one's dream no matter what age. While raising her family she took classes at Oral Roberts University, Tulsa University and Tulsa Junior College. Jimmie earned her Bachelor of Liberal Studies degree from the University of Oklahoma in 1986. She then accomplished a great feat of earning her Masters Degree of Library and Information Studies from the University of Oklahoma in 1987 at the age of 51.
Jimmie was a great mom to her three children with a sweet and caring disposition. She cared for others and left that legacy through her children and grandchildren. She valued hard work and education. She was an avid reader of many subjects and read thousands of books in her life. With her interest in books Jimmie became the Librarian at Skiatook City Library, the Librarian at the Tulsa City Library, and the Head Librarian at the Engineering Library at the University of Oklahoma. She helped shape many students' lives at the University. She was also a loyal fan and enthusiast for the OU Women's basketball and softball teams.
Jimmie was an advocate for the underprivileged and for her cherished students at the University. Jimmie also loved her animals. She rescued Westies and made a wonderful home to Buster and others. They were her babies. She even had a pet peacock at one time. She loved music with special interest in Opera and the arts.
She was preceded in death by her second husband Karl Bergey, her parents Murvin and Hattie Opal Scoggins, Murvin Scoggins, Jr. (brother) and Barbara Coy Berryhill (sister).
She is survived by her first husband, Allen Lee of Grove, OK, children Penny Dunman (Tripp) of Overland Park, KS, Shane Lee (Wendy) of Arlington Heights, IL, Keith Lee of Fayetteville, AR. She has 9 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren. She is survived by her siblings: Elizabeth Scoggins Baker, Buddy Coy, Nancy Coy, Jane Coy Chandler, Charles Coy, and Tommy Coy.
