Jerry Ann Hendrix Dixon passed away quietly in her sleep on January 13, 2021. She was 80 years old. Jerry was born in New Orleans, LA, the daughter of Virgil and Justine Hendrix but grew up in Homer, LA. Her parents died when she was young and Jerry was raised by her grandmother, Lucinda Duplantis.
She cherished her happy childhood growing up with her cousin and best friend, Beulah Ann.
Jerry became a fan of the LSU Tigers and, on the rare times she would make a disparaging comment, it pertained to the Alabama Crimson Tide football team. Her Louisiana roots made her quite the Cajun cook and her gumbo was a favorite in the Dixon family.
Jerry moved to Kansas City and worked at Merchants Bank and at Hallmark Cards where she met Don. As volunteers for the Kansas City Zoo, they picked up aged produce at area grocery stores for consumption by zoo animals. One of her fondest memories was holding and feeding a baby orangutan.
She loved children (especially babies) and animals (especially dogs) and music (especially Neil Diamond). Jerry was an an avid reader and her master gardening skills transformed their back-yard into a beautiful park.
Jerry is pre-deceased by her husband and love of her life, Don Dixon, and by her parents.
Survivors include her cousin Beulah Ann Parr and her husband Jim, of New Iberia, LA; Jerry is also survived by brothers-in-law Jim Dixon (Donna) of Niceville, FL; Terry Dixon (Nannette) of Longview, TX; and Greg Dixon (Jan) of Olathe, KS. She is also survived by her nieces and nephews.
The family wishes to thank St. Luke's Hospice and all the caregivers at Home Instead, Visiting Angels, and especially Audrey for all the kind, wonderful support and care provided to Jerry the last several months.
Graveside services will be private and a celebration of her life will take place after the pandemic. Memorial contributions may be made to the animal rescue organization of your choice.
