Janis Day

February 18, 1938 — February 27, 2023

Janis Day, 85, of Overland Park, passed away on February 27, 2023 at Delmar Gardens.

She was born on February 18, 1938 to Bert and Viva (Baker) Russell in Joplin, MO. She graduated from Joplin High School in 1956.

On May 18, 1956, she married Norval E. Day, and they made their home in Shawnee, KS, raising 3 children.

She was both a full-time executive secretary at United Telecom, (long before it became Sprint) and a full time mom participating in Boy Scouts, Little League and Dance recitals.

Some of her favorite activities included her love for music, playing the flute, piano and organ.

She loved to sew, making several of her own stylish outfits, and multiple dance costumes. She even created her own wedding dress as well as wedding dresses for her daughter and daughter-in-law.

She also loved the daintiness and lightness of butterflies!

Janis was a member of Lenexa Baptist Church.

Janis is survived by her loving husband, Norval, her children Ned (Peggy) Day of North Carolina, Mike Day of Lenexa, KS, and Susan (Ray) Silva of Olathe, KS. She is also survived by her grandchildren Kathryn and Jeffrey Silva of Olathe,; Kimberly and Michelle Day of North Carolina and her sisters Miriam Heyman of Miami, OK, and Judy Smith of Joplin, MO.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her brothers Kenneth, David, Bruce, and her sisters Betty, Joanne.

Even though we all believed we were her favorite, her heart was taken by a little Yorkie named Sassy, who will rest with her for eternity!!

Private Services will be held.
