Janet L. Kohler

July 28, 1958 — March 8, 2024

Janet L. Kohler, 65, of Olathe, Kansas, passed away at home surrounded by family on Friday, March 8, 2024. She was born on July 28, 1958 in Carthage, Missouri to Charles and Helen (Donalson) Scholpp.

Janet grew up on a farm between the two small towns of Lockwood and Golden City Missouri. She attended Lockwood High School and after graduation went to college at the University of Missouri at Kansas City to become a Medical Technologist.

While studying at UMKC, Janet met her future husband Daryl in a science class. After they married, they soon started their family. Janet worked as a Medical Technologist at a local hospital until their second daughter was born, when she decided to stay home to raise their two daughters.

Through the years, Janet was always crafting, sewing or quilting. Once she became interested in long arm quilting, Janet decided to buy a used quilt machine in great condition, with the only problem being the machine was in Florida! That purchase required a trip to Florida with a 16-foot Penske rental truck with a best friend! The trip was successful and so was the long arm machine! Janet enjoyed years of making quilts for family and friends and helped teach her daughters to quilt as well. And yet another generation will carry on the quilting legacy, as she taught her grandchildren to quilt too!

Janet also found joy in volunteering in many different roles over the years. She was a Stephen's Minister through her church and most recently mentored other cancer patients at the KU BMT Clinic.

Other hobbies she enjoyed were gardening & canning, reading her Bible, and traveling. A family trip to Big Cedar every summer became an annual tradition, thoroughly enjoyed by the grandchildren. Janet treasured her family and she bravely fought through multiple cancer diagnoses to spend every minute possible with her family (especially those grandchildren!). Her life will surely live on through her family as she was intentional to pour her life into them.

Janet is survived by her loving husband, Daryl Kohler, daughters, Emily (James) Dressler and Erin (Kenny) Yeung, grandchildren, Eliana, Aidan, and Torin Dressler, and Olivia, Isabella, and Lilyanna Yeung, sister, Cheryl (Larry) Lorence, nephews Brett (Catherine) Lorence and Adam (Nicole) Lorence, Great nieces and nephews, cousins, and sister -in-law Elizabeth Stoakes and husband, Mike.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Charles and Helen Scholpp.

A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions in Janet's memory be made to Olathe Health Hospice Care or Olathe Health Cancer Center.
