James P. Schmidt Obituary
Olathe, Kansas, (formerly of Fort Madison, Iowa). James Paul Schmidt, age 73, passed away on February 9, 2017 in Shawnee Mission, Kansas. He was born on August 11, 1943 in Fort Madison, Iowa, son of Ann (Greenwald) Schmidt and Paul A. Schmidt.
Jim graduated from Aquinas High School in Fort Madison, Ia. He began working for the Santa Fe Railroad at age 20 and retired in 2003 with 41 years of service. On July 18, 1964, he married Karen Menke of St. Paul, Ia. They became parents of two daughters. After Karen's death on June 6, 2004, he married Mary Adamson of Olathe, Ks. on April 22, 2006.
He was a longtime parishioner of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Fort Madison, Ia. and later Saint Paul Catholic Church in Olathe, Ks where he volunteered with the Adoration Chapel. He was also a lifelong member of the Knights of Columbus. James loved woodworking, camping, spending time with family, cooking and watching sports.
James was preceded in death by: his parents, his infant son (Daniel), and first wife, Karen.
Survivors include: wife, Mary; two daughters, Lori (Bill) Kanke of Saint Joseph, Mo, Lisa (Mark) Stevens of Somerset, NJ; grandchildren, Ethan (Chelsea) Kanke, Matthew Kanke, Phillip Kanke, Tim Stevens and Julia Stevens; two great grandchildren, Elizabeth and Jude Kanke; three step sons, Troy Shanks, David Shanks and Samuel Shanks.
A visitation will be held on February 14, 2017 from 6-7:30pm at Penwell Gabel Funeral Home in Olathe, Kansas. The family will receive visitors on February 15, 2017 at St. Paul Catholic Church in Olathe, Ks. at 9am with the funeral to be held at 10am. There will be a graveside service directly following.
