James Martin Carr, aged 89, passed away on July 3, 2024, at Olathe Medical Center.
Jim was born on December 8th, 1934, the 11th of 13 children. His parents were Leo and Maude Carr, of Charleston, MO. Jim led a distinguished life marked by his commitment to his country, his passion for photojournalism, and his devotion to family.
Jim served honorably in the Army and Army Reserves from 1954 to 1962. After his military service, he embarked on a notable career in photojournalism, working with esteemed organizations such as United Press International, Associated Press, National Geographic, and NASA. He also worked at several city newspapers throughout the country. His keen eye and exceptional ability to capture defining moments earned him numerous accolades, including a nomination for the Pulitzer Prize. Later, he channeled his expertise into teaching photojournalism at the University of New Mexico.
He was a proud alumnus of the University of Missouri - Columbia, where he honed the skills that would define his career. He was a loving husband to Jane Carr, a supportive father to Jonathan (Rachel) Carr, and a cherished grandfather to Anna (Noah) Hoskins. Jim was a lifelong follower of Jesus Christ. He was a member of Redeemer Lutheran Church and served as an elder there for several years.
Jim will be remembered for his integrity, dedication, and the impacts he made both through his lens and in his personal life.
