James Oliver Calton, Jr.
Born December 21, 1925 in Vinita, OK, the son of James Oliver Calton, Sr. and Ella Mae Chumley Calton.
James moved to Coffeyville, KS at the age of 1 year, and attended the Coffeyville School System. He served in the Merchant Marines in World War II from 1943-1946, and served in the US Army during the Korean Conflict from 1951-1953 with the rank of S/Sgt.
James worked in the aircraft industry, involved with construction, repair and maintenance of aircraft. He was first employed with Dixon Manufacturing Co. and then with TransWorld Airlines from 1964 until his retirement in 1987.
In 1954, he married Norma F. Bowman, and they divorced in 1971. The resided in Coffeyville, KS, Wichita, KS, and Excelsior Springs, MO. To this union four children were born.
In 1973, he married Joan Ruff Shults, and they made their home in Atchison, KS until 2005 when they moved to Olathe, KS. Joan survives at their home in Olathe.
James enjoyed traveling and together with Joan, they traveled an extensively, being in 49 of the 50 states. He also enjoyed reading, working crossword puzzles, and watching TV.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and sister Margie Marie Thomason, sister Bertie M. Ray, and his brother, Joe M. Calton. Survivors include his three sons, R. Joe Calton, Independence, MO, Patrick D. Calton, Independence, MO, Timothy J. Calton, Hollywood, CA, and one daughter, Kelly D. Calton of Excelsior Springs, MO, four step-children, Sherri S. Rambo, Olathe, KS, Janna S. Frodsham Beloit, KS, Lissa D. Shults, Honolulu, HI, and Rob R. Shults, Olathe, KS. Also surviving are twelve grandchildren and fourteen great-grandchildren.
Interment will be in Restlawn Cemetery in Coffeyville , KS at a later date.
