Coach Jack C. Mahaffie, age 90, passed away peacefully at his residence on February 18, 2022.
Jack was born in Olathe, Kansas to Beattie and Mary Mahaffie nee Greer on July 17, 1931. He was raised and attended school in Olathe where he met the love of his life Lois Rowland in third grade. They continued through school together and attended Olathe High School where he was the Football Quarterback and she was the Homecoming Queen. Jack was an outstanding athlete excelling at football, basketball and track.
After graduation, he accepted a basketball scholarship to Central Missouri State University. He played college basketball for four years where he and his team were inducted into the Hall of Fame. He received the first MIAA Sportsmanship Award granted his Senior year. After graduation, Jack and Lois married and started a family where he began his teaching and coaching career, first at Harrisonville High School then on to Grandview High School to coach and teach art. He retired from teaching in 1990. He and Lois loved to travel, enjoy their friends and dote on their 6 grandsons Ryan, Josh, Jake, Mike, Ben and Tommy. After Lois's death in 2003, he traveled and celebrated life with his friend Dory Hall.
He is preceded in death by his parents, his wife Lois, his brother John Mahaffie, and his grandson Jacob Albarelli.
He leaves behind his daughter Pam Mahaffie Albarelli and her husband Keith, their sons Ryan (Cari), Josh (Jen), and Mike. His son Mike Mahaffie with his wife Sue, their sons Ben (Katie) and Tommy (Brittany). And his great grandchildren, Carmen, Robin, Abel, Eli, Jennifer, Heather and Claire.
He was an amazing artist, an outstanding coach and an influential teacher and father. His over the top personality, his happy face and his infectious smile will be missed by everyone that knew him. He was a friend to everyone that he met and he truly loved life. Special thanks and love to Dory Hall who brought him much joy and companionship in his later years and to Keith Nease- the brother of his heart who has known and loved him most of his life.
The family will receive guests for a visitation from 2:00-3:00pm at Penwell Gabel Funeral Home, 14275 S. Black Bob Rd., Olathe, KS 66062, with the funeral service following at 3:00pm. A dinner reception following the service will be held at 4:00pm at the Mahaffie Stagecoach Stop/Museum. 1200 E. Kansas City Road, Olathe, Kansas 66061.
