Jack Edward Jorgensen, 91 years old, resident of The Gardens at Creekside, Olathe, Kansas, died Sunday morning March 13, 2011, at home from cardiac arrest. In lieu of flowers the family suggests contributions to Disabled American Veterans.
He was born March 21, 1919, in Sioux City, Iowa, to Jens Edward Jorgensen and Ruth Katherine (Riese) Jorgensen. He was the oldest of three brothers, Philip and Thomas the younger brothers. He left home at the age of 17 to join the Navy and was stationed in the Pacific from 1936 until the end of World War II. A Pearl Harbor survivor, he was on the USS Detroit in Pearl Harbor when it was bombed. He retired from the Navy as a Chief Petty Officer in 1956 and returned to Iowa. In 1962 he and his family relocated to Overland Park, Kansas. Upon retirement he moved to Lebanon, Missouri, and returned to Olathe in 2007.
He married Norma Edna (Weber) Jorgensen September 3, 1944. They had two sons, Mark Jorgensen (Cheryl) of Olathe, Kansas, and Paul Jorgensen (Julie) of Leawood, Kansas. He leaves two grandchildren Michael Jorgensen of Athens, Ohio, and Nathan Jorgensen (Kristina) of Brookings, South Dakota, and two great grandchildren, Claire and Paige Jorgensen also of Brookings, South Dakota.
He was preceded in death by his wife Norma in 2005 and his brother Thomas.
