Our mom Ida Moore passed away peacefully at Homestead of Overland Park Assisted living on October 21, 2024, at the age of 92.
Mom was born July 8th, 1932, to James and Lillie (Smith) McNeely in Jasper County, MO she was one of 6 children.
Mom met her best friend Irene’s brother, who was home from the military in 1947. She thought he was a little arrogant, but 2 years later she married him, our dad, Harold L. Moore on November 5th, 1949.
They started married life in their hometown of Pittsburg, KS where the five of us were born. From the pictures, we look liked very angelic children.
Times were hard then and dad had to travel to find work. They moved to California, Texas and Oklahoma, always coming back to Pittsburg in between. At last, dad got a job with the Union Pacific RR in Kansas City. They decided to move to Louisburg, KS to be closer to dad's work. While living there mom started working as a seamstress at Betty Rose Coats. In 1963 mom decided that it didn’t make sense for both of them to drive all the way into the city, so she found them the perfect house. It was on a tree lined circle drive in Shawnee, KS. This is where we lived for many years. A couple of years later, mom started working for the USPS. She worked full time but still managed to drive my brothers to ball practice and attend their games. She cooked a meal every night of the week (always starting with a 5lb sack of potatoes). We grew up and I’m sure caused mom the first of her grey hair (What can I say, it was the late 60’s/70’s, we weren’t angelic anymore) but we did start getting married and having children, making mom and dad the grandparents that our children loved more than anything!
In 1980 mom and dad moved to a nice home in Mission, KS. We were all married with children by then and life was good. Mom started on a bowling league which she stayed with for many years and became good friends with the ladies she bowled with, and was she a good bowler, she had a 170 average! Later she retired from the Postal Service and became a fulltime grandma, making birthday cakes she hand decorated, having sleep overs almost every weekend. Christmas’s the kids still talk about, she and dad always made everything special.
In 1991 our dad passed away, making mom a widow at age 58.
Our dad was a woodcarver and had left a lot of tools of the trade, so mom started messing around with it. She took a few classes and before you knew it she was doing all kinds of really unique carvings. She had found a hidden talent and I’m sure it helped fill a lot of time for her. Although I’m sure she had some lonely times we tried hard to include her in our lives. She was there as we started welcoming our own grandchildren, her great’s, into our families. 19 in all!
In May of 2022, at the age of 89, mom fell and broke her hip. That’s when we realized she had dementia. She had to move from her home which she had maintained independently for 30 years. Us (kids), (by now all on Medicare) visited her often, and did what we could to help her. This disease takes away a lot, but not everything, and we tried hard to keep her as much in the present as we could. Mom loved to talk about her kids and grandkids, she loved looking at pictures of everyone. Over the next two years she would welcome 3 great, great grandchildren!
