Howard Wright Shearer, II, "Howard Jr.", age 73, died March 14, 2015 from a brain tumor. In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to to the Deaf Cultural Center, 455 E. Park, Olathe, KS 66061, or to Deaf Christian Ministries Foundation of the Midwest, P.O. Box 13294, Overland Park, KS 66282.
Howard was born April 16, 1941 in Coffeyville, Kansas. His family moved to Olathe in 1948 where he attended the Kansas School for the Deaf. While a student at KSD, he was active in the National Council of the Boy Scouts of America, KAW Council, KSD Troop and was also an Eagle Scout. After graduation, he worked as a baker at Fred Wolferman, Inc. in Kansas City, MO for 7 years, was a cottage parent for the KSD Emery Hall Boys Dorm for 2 years, and a baking teacher at KSD for 31 years.
Howard was active in the Deaf Community, a member of the Kansas Association of the Deaf, Deaf Cultural Center, Olathe Club for the Deaf, and the National Fraternal Society for the Deaf. He was also a member of the Overland Park Church of Christ. After his retirement, he was a volunteer at the DCC and the Olathe Medical Center.
Howard was preceded in death by his wife, LaVetta (Gruver) Shearer, parents, Howard Sr. and Mildred (Cox) Shearer, sister Charolette Shearer. He is survived by his cousins, Carol Bidleman, Charles Cox, Cheryl Gentili, Tammy Arthur, Rhonda Siebenmorgen, Mike Gehring and Greg Gehring and many Deaf and hearing friends.
