Hilbert "Bert" E. Altis, 59, of Olathe, KS passed away Wednesday October 2, 2013 at home surrounded by his family. Bert was born on March 22, 1954 in Kansas City, MO to Hilbert E. and Barbara A. Altis. Bert was a 1972 graduate of Shawnee Mission North. After high school Bert went on to work in the HVAC industry and successfully ran his own business, Altis Sheetmetal, for the past 30 years.
On January 7th, 1977 Bert married his true love Mary "Elaine" McCarron. During their 36 years together they welcomed three daughters into their family, traveled to many places that people only dream of visiting, laughed uncontrollably, and loved one another whole heartedly.
Bert was a man that knew no stranger, would help anyone in need and could make you laugh without even truly trying. Bert's kind hearted, jovial demeanor and positive outlook on life is what gravitated people to him and is why his presence will be so greatly missed.
On October 2, 2013 Bert's three year battle with cancer came to an end. During these three years he fought courageously and never let his diagnosis control his day to day life.
Bert was preceded in death by his parents Hilbert E. & Barbara Altis.
He is survived by his best friend and wife of 36 years Elaine Altis, daughters; Elizabeth McKimmey, Brooke (Peter) Fucile, Amy (Bryan) Schmitt all of Olathe. Bert leaves behind 5 grandchildren; Brynn and Sean McKimmey, Vera and Gabriela Schmitt, and Evelyn Fucile. He also leaves behind his sister, Cindy Martin and 'favorite' sister-in-law and husband, Ann (Ron) Istas.
The family would like to thank the Dr.'s and nurses at KU cancer center along with KU Medical Center for their wonderful care these past three years in addition to K.C. Hospice and Palliative Care for helping make his transition take place in the manner in which he requested. The family would also like to thank the numerous family members and friends that helped ease their days at home with visits, food, and prayers.
