The service will be followed by a celebration of his life at the American Legion, 410 E. Dennis, Olathe, Kansas. Herb was born on February 15, 1942 to Dr. Herbert and Louise E. (Craig) Shuey. He spent his childhood at the Osawatomie State Hospital, where his father was the chief psychologist. The Shueys then moved to Kansas City, MO. so that Dr. Shuey could attend and graduate from KU Medical School. Immediately after Herb graduated from KU in 1964, he was inducted into the Army. He served in Vietnam, attaining the rank of Buck Sergeant. He was discharged in 1967. He spent the next few years traveling around Europe and South America before returning to the United States to enroll in a Master's program at M.U. After receiving his Master's degree in history, he began teaching high school at Manual High School in Kansas City, MO. After teaching a few years there, he moved to Johnson County to begin work in the Substance Abuse Program through Johnson County Mental Health. He then became a house parent at Park House, a residential facility for nonverbal Down's Syndrome children. He learned sign language at Park House, which led him to the Kansas School for the Deaf, where he taught welding and shop for several years. Though his commitment to the deaf community lasted throughout his life, he left the Kansas School for the Deaf in 1976 to begin the vocation that lasted the rest of his life: law enforcement. Herb began his law enforcement career with the Olathe Police Department, where he became part of the brotherhood of law enforcement officers that was a proud part of his life. In 1978 he joined the Johnson County Sheriff's Department. For the next 25 years, Herb devoted his life to protecting the public through law enforcement, and made lasting friendships with his fellow officers through a concept of friendship that included helping other officers in any way he could. He retired from the Johnson County Sheriff's Department in 2002 with the rank of First Master Deputy. After retirement from the Sheriff's Department, Herb joined the staff at Brown Mackie College. He gave of his time to many boards and community organizations. Among these were the KSD Advisory Board, the Olathe Library Board, Johnson County Mental Health Board, the Olathe Planning Board, the Kaw Valley Philological Society, barbershop quartets, the Olathe 150 Year Committee, and others. Herb is survived by his wife, Gene Marie, his children, Nicholas and Cathy, his brother, Russ Craig and his wife, Nancy, and several nieces and nephews.
