Harry Newell

Harry Leroy Newell, Sr. born September 19, 1922 in Oil City, PA, passed away June 18th at Pinnacle Ridge Nursing Home in Olathe, KS. A World War II Veteran, served in the Army's 101st Infantry Division in the Battle of the Bulge. He served from 1941 until being medically discharged in 1946. He then drove for Red and Tan bus lines until his retirement in 1987. He served as Rockland County Commander of the VFW from 1995 to 2007, and also served a term as District Commander during that time. He was once recognized as the Rockland County Veteran of the Year for his volunteer work serving veterans. He was married to Mary Louise Caproni for 57 years until her death in 2005. The son of John Wesley Newell and Jennie Mahood, he is preceded in death by his parents and nine brothers and sisters. He is survived by his brother Clayton (Kay) of Green Pond, NJ; his son, Harry (Paula) of Overland Park, KS, daughters Joyce (John) Buhler of Hamilton, NJ and Anita (Jeff) Peters of Congers, NY; granddaughters Shana (Mark) Sowles of Olathe, KS, Renee Smith of Queens, NY, Kelly (Steve) Chellberg of Lawrence, KS, Jessi (Cem) Wines of Prairie Village, KS, Kristi (Al) Veltidi-Rusiecki of New City, NY, Robyn (Dominic) Lombardi of Valley Cottage, NY and Jacqueline Veltidi, Melissa Veltidi and Erin Peters all of Congers, Ny; and four great-granddaughters and two great-grandsons.
In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that donations be given to a local VFW post or the Salvation Army.
