HARRY L. ACKER JR.
February 21, 1944 - January 21, 2016
Harry was born at Camp Wheeler, GA to Harry L. and Sara (Edmonds) Acker. He graduated from Gordon Military High School, Gordon Military College, and the University of Georgia. Harry was a member of the Sigma Delta Chi Professional Journalism Society. Earned a Masters Degree in Education from Kansas University and Masters' Degree in Education Media from Webster University.
Harry is survived by his wife Melva (Pearson) Acker . Son, Scott C. Acker, Step-Daughter, Terri Schoonover (Todd Knupp), Step-Son James (Mary) Green, Grandsons: Cole Acker, Brad (Maggi), Ryan (Kaycee), Matthew (Nicole) and Andrew Schoonover, and Michael Littrell; Great Grandchildren: Elliott, Henry, Oliver, Caleb, Molly and Leah Schoonover and Alistair Litterell. Sister Carolyn Acker; Brother, Lawrence (Kim) Acker; Brother-in-Law Marvin (Darlene) Pearson; nieces and nephews.
Harry was preceded in death by his parents, his infant son Keith Christopher and infant Great-Grand Daughter, Eleanor Schoonover.
Harry entered the US Army from Fort Gordon, GA, and was deployed to Vietnam. Upon his return he was assigned to Fort Bragg, to command the Army Photo Team. He photographed the riots in Washington, DC and floods in PA. He accompanied the White House Secret Service to photograph the funerals of Presidents Truman and Johnson, and worked with the US Criminal Investigation Department (CID) to photograph the crime scene and preserve evidence in the 1970 murders of the wife and two daughters of Capt. Jeffrey MacDonald. He was assigned to Izmir Turkey and worked closely with NATO in Brussels, Belgium. Harry was an instructor of Audiovisual and Education Specialist at the Command and General Staff College and the Public Affairs Office at Fort Leavenworth.
Harry was Director of Audiovisual Services at Kansas City Community College, and Director of Audiovisual Services for St. Louis Public Schools. He developed and contracted videos for use in a school bus for K-5 field trips. Five video tapes Harry developed won national recognitions and awards. Harry was an Adjunct faculty member of St. Louis University, lecturing in the School of Education and taught an educational television course for Undergraduates and Graduate students. He was a life member of Military Officers of America Association (MOAA), Corvette Museum, National Rifle Association (NRA); a member of VFW, American Legion; Hancock Lodge #311 and Scottish Rite at Fort Leavenworth; KU Alumni Association; and had a license as a Private Pilot for Single Engine.
On January 22, Military honors for "A Fallen Soldier' were held at the Missouri Veterans Home.
On January 28 Harry was laid to rest at the Leavenworth National Cemetery with full military honors.
Friends and relatives are invited to Aberdeen Village Chapel for a Celebration of Life which will be held February 20th at 1:30 pm..
