Harold Colston

August 12, 1956 — July 18, 2017

Harold W Colston, 60, of Olathe, KS, passed away July 18, 2017. Harold was born August 12, 1956 in Kansas City, KS to Gwendolyn Colston. Gwendolyn, along with Harold's beloved grandparents Eugene and Ruby Hall, raised Harold, his twin brother Harvey, older brother David, and younger brother Mark. Harold went to Wyandotte High School in Kansas City, KS, where he met his life-long partner Linda. Soon after they met, they were inseparable.

Harold and Linda were wed on July 17, 1976, and just recently celebrated their 41st anniversary together. In 1980, Linda gave birth to their eldest daughter Kelly. The family moved to Olathe in 1985, where they still reside today. Their younger daughter Amanda, arrived in 1990, as a surprise and a blessing.

Harold was a man of many talents, which showed itself through the numerous jobs he held throughout his life. He spent many years working at Colgate-Palmolive, he owned his own printing shop, and owned a catering company. In 2008, Harold finally found a place to call home with the Johnson County Sheriff's Office. Holding a number of different positions, Harold met, interacted with, made friends with, and cooked for the men and women of the Sheriff's Office. He finished his career as the Animal Control Officer, a job for which he was very proud to hold and enjoyed immensely. Harold loved animals, hating being stuck inside, and enjoyed helping others - so this role was the perfect fit for him.

Harold had many hobbies throughout his life, including taxidermy, stained glass artwork, gardening, hunting, and bowling. But, nothing stuck with Harold quite like BBQ. Harold started competing in KCBS BBQ events in 1999, and soon expanded into cooking for friends and family, catering events, and teaching others his beloved craft. Harold made so many good friends at the competitions, and considered many of them family.

Harold converted to Catholicism in 1994, after his daughter Kelly received the Sacrament of Confirmation. Just like everything else in his life, Harold jumped in feet first. He quickly made friends and became involved with many aspects of his beloved parish, Prince of Peace. Harold joined the Knights of Columbus, with Council 7909, in 1995. He served as Financial Secretary from 2000 through 2007, and was elected Grand Knight for 2007-2008. He joined the St. Philippine Duchesne 4th Degree Assembly 2260 on February 12, 2000.

After being diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia in early December 2016, Harold battled the cancer with the help of his family and vast network of friends. Harold will be remembered as a full-hearted, caring, and loving soul. He was always the first one to volunteer to help; always the one to make a joke; never had a bad word to say about anyone; and never met a stranger.

Harold was preceded in death by his mother Gwendolyn Colston. He is survived by his wife Linda Colston; daughter Kelly Colston, daughter Amanda Goering and husband Scott; and brothers Harvey, David, and Mark.
