Guillermo "Bill" Luna, Sr., 90 passed away in Overland Park, KS on March 15, 2022. Born on December, 19, 1931 in Lima, Peru, he was the son of the late Nemesio Emilio Luna and Alma Aurcarure de Luna. Guillermo was the last of his surviving siblings, Hilda and Julia.
Guillermo was a high school English teacher and radio broadcaster in Peru. He briefly served the Peruvian military and achieved the rank of corporal. Always aspiring the "American dream" from a young age, Guillermo was given the opportunity in 1964 to become sponsored and come to the Kansas City area. Due to that good friend sponsoring Guillermo, he soon was able to bring over his young wife (Lourdes) and 3 older children to join him in the United States. Their family grew and the Kansas City area became their home. Later on, both Guillermo and Lourdes became United States citizens.
What started as neighborhood acquaintances turned into something more, Guillermo and Lourdes Diana Velarde were engaged, then married on June 10, 1956. Guillermo was a hardworking and caring father with strong work ethics, family values and Catholic beliefs which he instilled in all his children.
To provide for his family, Guillermo worked tirelessly and eventually held two full-time jobs. He retired after 25 years of service from his employers the Equipment Company and Alameda Plaza Hotel (now InterContinental Kansas City at the Plaza). Since retirement, Guillermo turned his focus on becoming a real estate entrepreneur with his wife and help of his children.
Guillermo is survived by his wife of 65 years, Lourdes Diana Luna, and children: Rosie Umphenour, Guillermo E. Luna, Jr., Javier J. Luna (deceased), José L. Luna, Alberto A. Luna, Pilar P. Luna, and Isabel "Diana" Luna Camden; and grandchildren Veronica Smith, Michael Fugitt and Zachary Fugitt.
