Glenn Arthur Saunders, Athlete, Scholar, Artist, faithful husband and father was born Sept. 19, 1928 – died January 18, 2017. Glenn was known, loved and appreciated by many and passed peacefully surrounded by family and prayers at 11:05 PM. He was preceded in death by his wife of 67 years, Marion, by just 18 days. He is survived by his three sons: Gill, Bryan and David; 10 grandchildren; 5 nieces and several great-grandchildren.
Glenn grew up in Morgan Park (South side Chicago) Illinois. He was an athlete throughout school and attended Morgan Park United Methodist Church. He won a scholarship to Grinnell College in Grinnell, Iowa where he lettered in basketball for three years. He majored in Physical Education and History. He enlisted and fought in the Army during the Korean War.
Glenn enrolled for his Masters at Kansas University and began his teaching/coaching career at Shawnee Mission North. When Shawnee Mission East opened he took the Head Basketball and Head Golf coaching jobs from the opening until 1960 when he took the Head Golf position at Shawnee Mission South High School. He taught Drivers Education and volunteered for other school activities both athletic and social.
Glenn was an avid watercolorist, a member of the Kansas Art Guild and a winner of several awards for his painting. He also made his own original Christmas cards and many of his paintings are treasured possessions of his friends and family.
A little after retirement his wife Marion and he moved to Lakeview Village in Lenexa from the family home in Overland Park. They both were devout members of Old Mission United Methodist Church in Fairway, Kansas. They sang in the choir, taught Sunday School and did service work.
A funeral will be held for both Marion and Glenn at Old Mission United Methodist Church in Fairway KS on Saturday, February 25, at 1:30. Also, a Celebration of Life service will be held for this storybook, devoted, couple at Lakeview Village, 9100 Park St. on Friday, Feb. 24 from 2:30-4:30.
