Gladys "Katie" Mickelson

August 23, 1939 — October 16, 2021

Gladys "Katie" Mickelson was born August 23, 1939 to Ashley and Mary Minick in Kansas City, Kansas. Katie grew up in Kansas City Kansas and attended Washington High School and graduated in 1957. Katie was on the Banner line and enjoyed being part of the school plays. Katie married Richard "Dick" Bukaty on June 17, 1960 at Christ the King Catholic Church in Kansas City Kansas. Katie and Dick had 4 children, Darin, Robin, Jodi and Todd Bukaty. They raised their children in Wyandotte county and later moved to Stilwell Kansas. Katie was a homemaker and was active in the Junior League in Wyandotte County. She was also very active in PTO at her children's school, where she headed up the school supply committee. Katie later became the decorator and designer of the homes Dick built. She spent many hours picking out carpet, wallpaper and paint for the homes. Later Katie went to work outside the home for Senator Harry Darby. She then worked for Mercury Marine, Wells Fargo, Sprint and North Supply where she finally retired. Katie later married Richard Mickelson on July 29, 2000. Together they lived in Olathe and later moved to Lenexa. Katie then decided she was not done working and went back to work for Richards company AGA. Richard and Katie both decided to enjoy life and put on their travel shoes. They loved traveling together. They enjoyed going to different states, going on cruises and visiting Jodi's family in Texas. Katie loved going to Arizona, New Mexico, Las Vegas and Branson to name a few of the favorites. Richard and Katie loved estate sales and antique shopping. Did I mention Katie was a shopper? She loved shopping and knew just where to go to get that special something. Shopping was her hobby. Speaking of hobbies. Katie was an amazing painter. She was very talented and has painted many amazing pictures. She loved painting pictures of her grandkids. She was such an amazing painter, even her painting teacher would ask her for advice and several times she would ask Katie to "fix" a painting she just couldn't get to look right. Katie adored her12 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren. She loved having them over and spend the night. And of course, she always took them shopping. She loved going to her grandkid's baseball, soccer, football, basketball and even horse shows. She enjoyed this very much and they kept her very busy.
