Geraldine Alice Kieferle Sherraden went peacefully to be with her Lord on Tuesday, February 16, 2010 at the Olathe Medical Center in Olathe, Kansas.
She was the wife of Edward Sherraden. Salina was their home from 1953 to 2008 when they moved to Aberdeen Village in Olathe, Kansas.
Geraldine was born January 5, 1924, on a farm South of Abilene, Kansas. She was one of five daughters born to Louis and Minnie Kieferle and was baptized in Turkey Creek in 1934. She graduated from Dickinson County High School in 1941 and was a rural school teacher for five years. In 1946 she married Edward Sherraden, who had served in the Pacific Theatre during World War II. Immediately after their marriage they continued their teaching careers together in Milford, Kansas. Their first of six children was born in 1951 in Emporia, Kansas where they attended Emporia State College. In 1953 Edward and Geraldine moved to Salina, Kansas where they lived for 63 years, and where the remainder of their children were born.
Geraldine enjoyed baking, gardening, photography, crocheting, and vacations with her family. She traveled to all 50 states and abroad with her husband. She was a Sunday school teacher, member of First Baptist Church Circle, helped with Bible School and was a Cub Scout leader.
Geraldine was a member of various civic organizations, including the Sunflower Lioness Club, Faculty Wives, Salina Area Retired Teachers, Delta Kappa Gamma, and Kappa Kappa Iota. Much of her life was filled with singing, often performing with her husband at various events including weddings, funerals, and nursing homes. She was a longtime member of the Abilene Adelines, The Staccato Notes Music Club, and the Choir at First Baptist Church where she was a member for over 50 years. She instilled the love of music in all of her children. Her fondness for children was also evident as she operated the Sherraden Nursery School on Lewis Avenue for twelve years.
Geraldine was preceded in death by her two sisters, Irene Kirk and Delores Lawson; and by her son, Kevin Scott, who died as a child in 1966. Surviving members of her loving family include her husband of 63 years, Edward Sherraden; her children Terry W. Sherraden (Sarah), Tallahassee, Florida; Sandra K. Jaggard (Craig), Olathe, Kansas; James E. Sherraden (Elizabeth), Nashville, Tennessee; Mark L. Sherraden (Michele), Overland Park; Karen S. Trader (Michael), Overland Park. Eight grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren brought Geraldine much joy. They are Christopher, Daniel, and Andrew Sherraden; Tallahassee, Florida; Mandy Inchaustegui (Anthony) and their two children, Alexander and Elijah, Los Angeles, California; Jason Jaggard (Sarah), Los Angeles, California; Michael Sherraden, Overland Park, Kansas; Elizabeth Stanton, Fort Hood, Texas; and Scott Stanton, Topeka, Kansas. She is also survived by two sisters, Vera Riekeman, Abilene, Kansas; and Betty Hartmann, Buena Park, California.
Geraldine gifted her body to the Kansas University School of Medicine for medical research. A celebration of her life will be held at the First Baptist Church in Salina, Kansas on Saturday, February 27, at 1:30 in the afternoon, followed by a reception with family in the Fellowship Hall. Remains will be laid to rest at Ebenezer Cemetery at a future date. In Geraldine's Bible were found the words: "There isn't a thing I would change in my life. I am very happy. I have truly been blessed."
