George “Opa” Heim, 77, of Overland Park, passed away on June 30, 2024 at his home surrounded by family.
He was born on November 25, 1946 to Fernand and Marianna (Tamela) Heim in Bandung, Indonesia.
On April 20, 1978, he married Patricia Heim. George and Patricia lived in La Mirada, California and then moved to Overland Park, Kansas.
He was a member of the Army where he served in the Vietnam War as a medic. He earned a Bronze Star, Silver Star, and Purple Heart award.
He started out his career at Desk Top Publisher, then DST as a computer programmer.
George was a USSF state level referee for 25 years at the high school and collegiate level.
George worked as a Paraprofessional for the Shawnee Mission School District at Westridge Middle School for 15 years.
He was also a member of the men’s coaching staff for soccer at Shawnee Mission West.
He liked to spend his weekends at Leawood Park as the referee coordinator for nearly 20 years.
In his free time, he enjoyed spending time with his family doing numerous activities, such as fishing, grilling, and playing board games. He also enjoyed solving sudoku puzzles, reading Louis L’Amour books, watching soccer and his favorite TV shows, and hanging out with his dogs.
George is survived by his loving Wife, Patricia, daughter, Terra Huston (Steve), son, Nick Heim, daughter, Sarah Thesman (Caleb), grandson, Jordan Hasker, granddaughters, Savannah and Shelby Hasker, sisters, Laura Heim, Gerda Buskirk (Dale), Sonja Edinger (Fred), and Sherry Chavez (Ralph), sister-in-law’s, Betty Aquino and Barbara Strack, nieces, Margo Todd-Jaime, Tamara Boylan, Jennifer Durnell-King, Vanessa Purdy, Randi Garcia, Angel Aquino, and Janine Boza, nephews, Steve Todd, Rudi Buskirk, Jake Durnell, David Aquino, and Adam Aquino, and numerous great nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Marianna, father, Fernand, brother, Freddy, and brother-in-law, Gene Aquino.
Visitation will be held on July 6, 2024 at 1 p.m., at Penwell-Gabel Cremations, Funerals & Receptions, Olathe, Kansas.
Funeral services will be held on July 6, 2024, at 2 p.m. at Penwell-Gabel Cremations, Funerals & Receptions, Olathe, Kansas with Pastor Brooks Neese officiating.
