Franklin B. Thompson

January 9, 1944 — March 9, 2018

Franklin Burl Thompson, 74, of Overland Park, Kansas went home to be with the Lord on March 9, 2018.

Frank was born on January 9, 1944 in Wellington, KS to Burl and Betty (Hackney) Thompson. He graduated Wellington High School, class of 1962, making lifelong friends through band, drama, football and basketball. Frank served in an United States Air Force band playing bass trombone from 1964-1968, stationed at Torrejón AFB, Madrid, Spain. Following his service he attended the University of Kansas and completed his Bachelor of Music Education degree in 1972. Upon graduation Frank taught choir, band and orchestra in Basehor KS and JC Harmon High School in KCK.

Frank met his bride Nancy (Staker) in 1974 at KU Band Camp. They were married June 7, 1975 in Meade, KS. To this happy union were born two daughters Allison & Elizabeth, whose childhoods were filled with many warm memories. Frank led his family in membership and faithful leadership at Shawnee Church of the Nazarene.

Frank worked in sales and marketing, and was able to combine it with his love of music, eventually retiring from Nazarene Publishing House in 2007. After retirement he enjoyed devoting time to his grandchildren, and to his lifelong love for travel, photography, researching ancestry, and following Jayhawk teams.

Frank was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his loving and faithful wife Nancy Thompson, of Overland Park KS; two daughters Allison (Kyle) Miller of O'Fallon MO, and Elizabeth (Jonathan) Rowell of Shawnee KS; four grandchildren Sydney, Hadley, Brooklyn, & Truman; sister Barbara (Walt) Pasciak of Pearland TX, sister Donna Vandegrift of Phoenix AZ, and brother Ken (Yana) Thompson of Phoenix AZ; as well as many loving friends from church, community, travel, and coffee shops.

Frank chose an all-natural burial method; a graveside service for immediate family occurred at Oak Hill Cemetery, Lawrence, KS. Friends are invited to join the family for a celebration of life service on Saturday, March 24th at 10:00am at Shawnee Church of the Nazarene, 5539 Quivira Rd.; visitation preceding at 9:00am.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to Kansas City Hospice House (www.kchospice.org) or Nazarene Compassionate Ministries (www.ncm.org).
