FRANK LEWIS MACKEY, SR., 88, passed away on Saturday, May 30, 2015 in Olathe, KS. He was born on January 18, 1927 in Ponca City, OK to the late George Mackey and Mayme Kenney Mackey. Frank has resided in Olathe, KS for the past 65 years.
A lifetime stockman, Frank was recognized nationally and internationally for his ability to market dairy cattle. Having an eye for identifying quality dairy cattle was Frank's trademark. He took great pride in his family, land and had a multi-faceted livestock operation as a livestock dealer, Holstein cattle farmer, and feeder. Frank came to Overland Park, KS at the age of 14 to work for his brother and mentor, Joe Mackey, renowned horseman, dairyman, and owner of Somerset Stables.
Frank was a member of the Divine Mercy Catholic Church, Dairy Farmers of America, Pure Milk Producers, and Livestock Marketing Association. He also served in the United States Coast Guard.
He married Virginia Fanning, the love of his life, on May 1, 1950. They were happily married for 65 years. She survives him, along with their six children, Frank (Rhonda) Mackey, Jr., Spring Hill, KS; Steven (Kim) Mackey, Stilwell, KS; Karen (Harold) Holland, Bucyrus, KS; Mark (Shelly) Mackey, Bucyrus, KS; Susan Mackey, Spring Hill, KS; and Jake Mackey, Gardner, KS; 17 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by six brothers and five sisters.
Visitation will be held on Monday, June 1, 2015 from 5:00-8:00pm with Recitation of the Rosary at 5:30pm, at Penwell-Gabel Funeral Home, 14275 S Blackbob, Olathe, KS. Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Tuesday, June 2, 2015 at 10:30am at Divine Mercy Catholic Church, 555 W. Main St., Gardner, KS. A graveside service with military honors will follow at Resurrection Catholic Cemetery, with luncheon to follow at Holy Spirit Catholic Church, Overland Park, KS.
