Frank W. Bennett, a veteran of World War II and the Korean War, died Saturday at the age of 95, surrounded by his family, who loved him dearly.
Born in Seymour, Texas, in 1917, Frank was the son of Ethyl (Smith) Bennett and Benjamin Franklin Bennett. He earned the Distinguished Flying Cross as well as other military honors, traded signed "short snorter" bills with Charles Lindberg, and routinely flew missions over the North Pole. The greatest joy in his life, however, was his wife Marjorie Morris Bennett, to whom he was married for almost 76 years.
During his 22-year career in the Air Force, Frank lived with Marge all over the world, one of their favorite assignments being in the Alsace-Lorraine region of France. He was the proud dad of Roberta June Swope, Joyce Coker Dreier, and Marilyn Jo Huff. He loved taking his family to the Officers Club, embarrassing our mother by asking the band to play 50s favorite "Margie," and treating the girls to "Shirley Temples" and dancing with them on his feet. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, tennis, and golf.
After retiring from the Air Force, Frank finished a master's degree in counseling and helped thousands secure jobs as a counselor with the State of Missouri. He and Marge lived in St. Louis for 34 years before moving to Olathe, Kan., in 2004 to be closer to family.
Left to cherish his memory are wife Marjorie, his daughters and their spouses, June Swope (Nick), Joyce Coker Dreier (Ron), and Marilyn Huff (Dick), 12 grandsons: Todd Trueblood, Tague Trueblood (Kim), Thor Trueblood, John Swope (Rachel), and Nick Swope (Sonia); Chad Coker (Renee), Scot Coker (Melissa), Bret Coker (Marissa), and Joel Coker (Kalie); and Christopher Huff, Cory Huff, and Adam Huff. He also had great grandchildren too numerous to count. He was preceded in death by his parents, his identical twin brother Wilson Bennett, and brothers and sisters Evelyn Marion, Porter Pixley, David Pixley, and Dora Lee McCracken.
A private family service with military honors is planned on Jan. 25 at Penwell-Gabel in Olathe. His remains will be interred in Fort Leavenworth National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to the Frank W. Bennett Memorial Fund at Marillac, 8000 W. 127th St., Overland Park, KS 66213 (c/o Sally Borel).
