EVELYN STOKES
Evelyn Stokes, 68, of Overland Park, KS, passed away on April 15, 2009 at her home after a year-long courageous battle with melanoma.
Evelyn was born September 12, 1940 in Stover, MO to Erich and Leona Miller. After leaving the family homestead, she moved to Kansas City in 1958 and began working at the former City National Bank and met her husband, Sherman Stokes, in 1961. They were married on September 1, 1962 and moved to Tulsa, OK in 1971. She continued her banking career in Tulsa for 26 years. In 1996, Evelyn and Sherman moved back to Overland Park, to watch her grandchildren grow in to happy, bright, confident young people. She enjoyed a blessed Holy Week and Easter with her family before she passed away. Evelyn loved her Catholic faith, and was a member of the Church of the Ascension.
She is survived by her husband of 46 years, Sherman John Stokes; daughters Nancy Ann Malley (Dennis), Barbrara Ann Petracek (Kevin); and grandchildren (the joy of her life!), Nicholas, Madeline, Madison, Benjamin, and Daniel . She is also survived by sisters, Edna Wimmer (Bernard), Kearney, NE; Vi Meuller, Raymore, MO; and Ida Mae Walcott, Arnold, MO; and sisters-in-law Betty Miller, Kansas City, MO; and Louise Miller, Gladstone, MO. She was preceded in death by her parents, Erich and Leona Miller, brothers Marvin Miller and Leroy Miller; and brothers-in-law, Bill Walcott and Harold Mueller.
She will be missed by all those whose lives she touched, and will be remembered as a loving, caring and supportive wife, mother, "mema" and friend. The family wishes to thank Liz and Eileen, nurses of Catholic Community Hospice, for their compassionate care, as well as other hospice staff who provided for her spiritual needs. Memorial contributions are suggested to Catholic Community Hospice or Church of the Ascension.
