Eugene "Smoky" Neil Thomeczek, 78, of Olathe, passed away on December 9, 2019 in his home. His wife of over 58 years was at his side.
He was born December 7, 1941 to Elmer and Sarah "Jane" (Bruner) Thomeczek in Lakin, Kansas. Being raised on a farm in Kendall, Kansas instilled in him the importance of hard work, and helped him to become a man of honor and integrity.
On June 3, 1961, he married his high school sweetheart, Lois Eileen Jury. Eventually, Gene and Lois made their home in Olathe, Kansas.
Gene worked for the FBI as a clerk in Washington, DC (1961-1964) and in Kansas City (1964-1968) before becoming a Special Agent. He served in Birmingham and Louisville before returning to Kansas City in 1979. He continued in the Kansas City office before retiring in 1998, after almost 37 years of service to his country.
He was a long-time and very active member of Prince of Peace Parish in Olathe, and the Knights of Columbus Council. He devoted countless hours serving his parish, including being the "donut and coffee man", hospital ministry, St. Mary's Food Kitchen, Early Bird Rosary leader, as well as mentor and friend.
Gene is survived by his wife, Lois; his daughters, Kellie Thomeczek, Kim Durbin, and Karol Sanders; his grandchildren, Jessie (Ryan) Charpentier, Katy (Eric) Christensen, Lacie Sanders, Thomas Nay, Taylor Sanders, and Lucas Schroeder; great grandchildren, Dally, Faith, Carter, Riggin, Teresa, Cinch, Evangeline, and Sloan; brother, Rick Thomeczek, sister, Allison (Roy) Bushek and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents and sisters, Margie, Charlotte, and Judy.
He will be remembered for his deep faith, his devotion to family, his sense of humor, and his generous heart. He truly, was a man who lived to love.
Visitation will be held Monday, December 16, 2019, 6-8 pm at Prince of Peace Catholic Church, 16000 W. 143rd, Olathe, Kansas, with prayers of the rosary offered at 5:30 pm.
Funeral Mass will be held on Tuesday, December 17, 2019, 10:30 am, also at Prince of Peace Catholic Church. Private inurnment at Gate of Heaven Catholic Cemetery, Kansas City, KS.
