Eugene Michael Farrell

November 23, 1951 — November 24, 2016

Eugene Michael Farrell, 65, of Olathe, passed away on November 24, 2016.

He was born on November 23, 1951 to Anne Kosugi in Japan and was later adopted and brought to the United States by Eugene Farrell.

Gene is survived by his loving wife Robena, his daughter Amy Mattison and his grandchildren Marley, Walker and Rylynn.

Gene crossed paths with his future wife working at the Presbyterian Manor in Topeka, KS at the age of 17. He asked Robena out to dinner at the China Inn fall of 1969 and the rest is history. They were married December 30, 1972 while attending Washburn University and spent the last 44 years growing and representing the meaning of true love. He graduated 1974 with a BA in Sociology and Criminology and was employed by the State of Kansas with Social Rehabilitation Services in Wyandotte County. As a Social Services Supervisor he forged many life-long friendships that to this day remain dear to himself and his family members.

Gene's passion and love of music started as a young teen and lasted his entire life. Having played in multiple bands his prized accomplishments include: playing at popular venues from Topeka to Kansas City, performing for political events and jamming with the infamous Cotton Candy, a respected blues singer and founder of the Kansas City Blues Society.

When not indoors playing his guitar Gene could be found playing any sport of his choice being naturally athletic. He played soccer, baseball, golf and basketball for fun. He was a Tennis Pro at Wood Valley Racquet Club where he meticulously practiced his strokes and enjoyed teaching others to play. Husband and wife were a perfect match on the court as Gene could always find something to perfect on Robena's swing. After years on the court as double partners both were elated to pass the talent to daughter Amy.

Gene's pride and joy was his daughter, Amy Mattison. Both may be quick to deny similarities but this father daughter pair spoke their own language. Gene and Amy have mastered joking, laughing, teasing and keeping each other young at heart. Gene spent endless hours coaching Amy on any and every sport. He instilled determination, efficiency and the never-give-up attitude that carries her through life to this day. There is no denying the love that flowed between them both that will remain for all time.

Grandchildren Marley, Walker and Rylynn knew Gene as their "Poopa". Their love for him meant the world and allowed him to remain a big kid at heart. Hours of fun and play spent laughing filled the house when they were around one another. Gene loved Slurpee's and shaved ice just as much as the kids do and it was never a wrong time to hop up and go get one. He loved to hear their laughs and see their smiles and made it a point to tell them just how special they are.

Gene Farrell was loved beyond words and will be remembered by his family members through what he enjoyed most in life; laughing. His family request that in lieu of flowers donations be made to St. Baldrick's Foundation to fight the battle and help improve awareness of childhood cancer research.
