Ethel Kathleen Moody

September 7, 1923 — September 30, 2019

Ethel Kathleen Moody, 96, recently of Shawnee, passed away on September 30, 2019. She was born on September 7, 1923 to Lewis and Mary (Winkler) Austin in Richland Township near Paola, KS.

Ethel grew up in rural Miami county KS where she lived and helped on the farm with her parents and 4 brothers and 1 sister. In the spring of 1941, she married James C. Moody. They had one son, born in March of 1942, James D. Moody, who passed away in April of 1942. WWII came along and James C. was drafted into the Army and spent 3 1/2 years in the European theatre.

During the war, Ethel worked at the laundry at the Olathe Naval Air Station. She also went back to high school and received her diploma. Ethel lived with her in-laws during the war years, saving every penny she could. After James returned home from the war, they both worked at the Olathe Naval Air Station for a few years and in 1951, they welcomed their second son, Duane Moody. Ethel worked at various jobs including Russell Stovers Candy in Kansas City and at King Radio for a short time. In the mid 60's she worked for Deluxe Check Printers, where she was a proof reader. She liked the job because it required a great deal of attention to detail, plus they had a profit sharing program. She retired from Deluxe at the age or 62. James was already retired and they wanted to do some traveling.

James and Ethel enjoyed playing pitch with friends. They also enjoyed dancing to the big band sounds. After James passed in August of 1995, Ethel would take bus trips with friends to Branson and go to the shows there.

Ethel is survived by her loving son, Duane (Pam) Moody; grandchildren, Kimberly, Jeffrey, Jill, Corey, Melinda; and 14 great grandchildren. She loved her grandchildren and great grandchildren very much.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 54 years, James C. Moody; son, James D. Moody; brothers, George Austin, Raymond Austin, Ralph Austin, Kenneth Austin; and sister, Marie Boyd.

There has not been a kinder, loving, and morally upright person in this world.
