Esther C. Middlemass

April 23, 1925 — July 4, 2018

Esther Caroline Middlemass, age 93, passed away July 4, 2018. Esther was born in Paola, Kansas on April 3, 1925 to Verlin Snouffer & Mary Phillips Snouffer. She graduated in 1942 from Paola High School, and attended Paola College/Ursuline Academy. On April 14, 1945 she married John C. Middlemass and was married to John for 69 years, until his death in 2014. In the early 1950's, she owned and operated one of the first Merle Norman Cosmetics Studios in the state of Kansas before selling to stay home to care for and raise her daughters. She later joined her husband's commercial and residential development company, where she worked alongside him for over 30 years.

Esther was a charter member and former Worthy Grand Matron of the Mera Chapter of the Order of Eastern Star, president of the Johnson County Shrine Auxiliary (1954), and was also involved with Camp Fire Girls and Boys, serving as the leader of her daughter's local group for three years. She sang in the church choir and served as a Deacon at Leawood Presbyterian Church.

Esther was a lover of Boston Terriers, counting half a dozen of them as some of her best buddies over the years, including her beloved rescue Boston Terrier, Sammy Jo, who slept faithfully by her side until he passed. In addition, Esther was a wonderful cook, relishing in making fried chicken for her family—her granddaughter claims it was the best in the land!

Esther is survived by her daughters, Susan Day and Alexandria Miles; her granddaughter, Jennifer Day-Burget; Jennifer's husband, Aaron Burget; great grandson Henry Thomas Day-Burget; great granddaughter Jillian Caroline Day-Burget; and a sister, Eleanor Grace Hannon. Preceding her in death were her husband, John C. Middlemass; brother, Lester Snouffer; sister, Mildred Harris-Hertha; and, sister, Mary Beth Kaiser.

Esther was a woman who truly appreciated and loved life and the people in it. She was a caring and loving mother, wife and grandmother, and was a loyal friend to all who knew her. Esther will be missed greatly by her family and the many friends that she treasured, and to whom she bestowed unconditional kindness and generosity.

There will be a graveside memorial service for Esther at the Osawatomie Cemetery, 32504-32650 Osawatomie Road, at 11:00 AM on Sunday, August 12th. The service will be followed by a luncheon at 12:30 at the Paola United Methodist Church, 209 S. Silver Street, Paola, Kansas.
