Ernestine Tietjen

April 17, 1925 — February 18, 2015

Ernestine Catherine Tietjen was born on April 17, 1925 in New York City, NY, the youngest of 6 children to immigrant parents, Anna and Jozsef Damits . She was received into the Kingdom of God through the Rite of Holy Baptism in New York City. Ernestine attended New York City Public Schools graduating in 1944.
Ernestine was married on June 13, 1953 to Rev. John H. Tietjen. Ernestine and John had four children, Catherine Ann Tietjen married to Christopher Yanker; Laurence John Tietjen married to Christie Tietjen, Mary Angela Mindrup married to David Mindrup; and Sarah Elizabeth Ross married to Daniel Ross. There are seven grandchildren: Jessica Tietjen married to Greg Huschka, Jennifer Tietjen married to David Maupin, Carrie Tietjen; Joseph Mindrup, Rachel Mindrup; Elizabeth Ross; and Chase Ross. There is one great-grandchild Olivia Hope Maupin. Before marriage Ernestine worked at a stock exchange on Wall Street. Ernestine supported her husband John in obtaining his doctorate and his life in the Lutheran Church which included turbulent church political times and joyous celebrations. She loved to watch her grandchildren mature into responsible caring adults. Ernestine awoke each day saying "This is the day the Lord has made, let us rejoice and be glad in it."
Ernestine Tietjen died on February 17, 2015. She was preceded in death by her husband John, her parents Anna and Jozsef Damits, her three sisters Elizabeth, Anna, and Ella, and her brother Frank. Survivors include her sister Dorothea Spadaro of Long Island New York, three daughters, Catherine Tietjen and her husband Pastor Christopher Yanker of Weatherford, TX, Mary Mindrup and her husband, David of Olathe, KS, and Sarah Ross and her husband Daniel of Johnston PA; one son Laurence and his wife, Christie of St. Louis, MO; seven grandchildren Jessica Tietjen and her husband Greg Huschka and Carrie Tietjen of St. Louis, Jennifer Tietjen and her husband David Maupin of Overland Park, KS, Rachel and Joseph Mindrup of Olathe, KS, Elizabeth Ross of Olathe, KS and Chase Ross of Johnston, Pennsylvania. One great-grandchild, Olivia Hope Maupin of Overland Park, KS.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, February 19 from 5 to 7 p.m. at Penwell-Gabel Funeral Home located at 14275 S Blackbob Rd, Olathe, KS 66062.
A funeral Eucharist will be held on Friday, February 20 at 10:30 am, St. Mark's Lutheran Church of Olathe, KS with Pastor Dietzen pastor of St. Mark's presiding. A committal rite will be held subsequently at Greenwood Cemetery, Fort Worth, Texas with Pastor Christopher Yanker presiding.
In lieu of flowers, the family has expressed a preference for memorial contributions to St. Mark's Lutheran Church her congregation, 21155 College Blvd, Olathe KS 66061 or Freedom House, where her daughter is executive director fulfilling her mission helping people afflicted by violence.
