Eleanor Jean Hunt was born December 30, 1947 to Ira E. Hunt and Lora Lee York Hunt in Lawrence, KS. Ellie and her family lived in Topeka until she reached the 7th grade (1960) when they moved to Olathe, KS. She met her husband, Michael Richard Brewer, in middle school in Olathe.
She graduated from Olathe High School in 1965 and then attended Kansas State Teacher's College (now Emporia State University) in Emporia, KS. There she was an active member of Sigma Sigma Sigma sorority. Ellie and Michael married on August 24, 1968 in Olathe, KS. She went on to receive an elementary education degree from Kansas State Teacher's College in 1969. Ellie briefly taught school for 3 years in Valley Center, KS, then in Prairie Village, KS where she taught at East Antioch.
Their first son, Ryan Michael, was born May 11, 1978, and their daughter, Amy Christine, was born on September 11, 1980. In 1982, the family moved to Emporia, KS where Ellie stayed at home with her children. Their third child, Adam Jeffrey, was born December 28, 1984. Ellie went back to teaching full-time in 1990, at Maynard Elementary teaching 3rd grade and then 5th grade. She continued to teach there until Riverside Elementary was built replacing Maynard, at which point she taught at Riverside Elementary until her retirement in 2008.
Her husband, Michael, preceded her in death in 1998. Ellie then moved to Topeka, KS in 2008 after retiring so she could babysit and enjoy her grandchildren. She also worked part-time for Jim Hanna at Ameriprise Financial, purely because she enjoyed it so much. The rest of her time was spent caring for her grandchildren, even throughout her illness. Her granddaughters were, in Ellie's own words, her "heartbeat".
She stayed in close touch with many friends, especially her Tri-Sigma sisters and teaching friends, often meeting for lunch and going on small trips with them as well.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband. She is survived by her children, Ryan Brewer (Lawrence), Amy, Luther, Kaitlyn, Anna and Emilie Braun (Topeka) and Adam, Becca and Lainey Brewer (Olathe), and her sister, Carolyn Robbins (Fayetteville, AR). Ellie was a member of the Susana Wesley United Methodist Church in Topeka, KS, and was a longtime member of the First United Methodist Church in Emporia prior to moving to Topeka. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Sue Days Ovarian Cancer Fund or the American Cancer Society would be appreciated by the family.
