Funeral service for Edna Hand, age 68 of Stilwell, will be Thursday, Oct 1, 2009 at 2:00 pm at St. Michaels and All Angels Episcopal Church, 6630 Nall Ave, Mission, KS, followed by interment in Pleasant Valley Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, Oct 1, 2009 at Penwell-Gabel Funeral Home, 14275 S Blackbob Rd., Olathe, KS.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to the American Cancer Society or to the church.
Edna Marie Hand passed away on Tuesday, Sept. 29, 2009 at Kansas City Hospice House. She was born on Mar 10, 1941 in Hartington, NE to Edmund and Elizabeth Arens. She was married to James Peter Hand on January 26, 1963 in Manhattan, KS. Edna and her husband, James, raised their family in the Leawood, KS area.
In addition to raising her three daughters, Edna enjoyed a career as a medical technologist, and worked for some time at St. Joseph Hospital in Kansas City, MO. She was involved with the Nelson-Atkins Art Museum, Powell Gardens, and the Kansas City Lyric Opera. Edna was also active in fundraising for the American Cancer Society and the American Heart Association.
She is survived by her husband of 46 years, James Hand, of Stilwell, her daughters Julie (Jeff) Singer of Overland Park, Lauri Hand of Chicago, IL, and Joelle Hand of Seattle, WA, her grandchildren Jenna and Jared Singer, her mother, Elizabeth Arens, and her brothers John (Rosie) Arens, Ken Arens, and her sisters Kathy Adolph, Karen Baker, and Dee (Rick) Prentice, and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her father, Edmund Arens.
